Project Summary
Background
Mango is the national tree of Bangladesh and is called the king of fruits for its incomparable taste. Mango is a nutritious fruit containing plenty of phytochemicals. The mangoes' pulp contains high dietary fiber, vitamin C, provitamin A, carotenoids, and polyphenols, making this fruit popular worldwide.
Bangladesh-grown mango possesses a delicious taste and flavor; hence, its demand is increased in different countries. Bangladesh has ranked 7th among the world's mango-producing countries. Total land areas in Bangladesh under mango cultivation are 2,35,348 acres, from which12,22,368 lakhs tons of mangoes were produced (BBS, 2020, published May 2021). Bangladesh exported 791 MT of mango till June 2020-21 (Plant Quarantine Wing of DAE), which is almost three times higher than the previous year. Relevantly, the world's mango export trade was about $1.5 billion in 2021, indicating Bangladesh's massive export potential.
Generally, 21 varieties of mango are exported worldwide; among them, many are produced in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, nearly 72 varieties of mangoes are grown; among them, popular are Khirsapat, Gopalbhog, Lengra, Fazli, Hariyabhanga, and Amrapali. Mangoes are available Bangladesh market from mid-June to the first week of September.
In Bangladesh, quality mangoes are produced mainly in Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, Satkhira, and hill-tract districts. Geographically, these districts are far from the capital Dhaka. Consequently, 25-30% of the mangoes produced are wasted due to the non-use of modern agricultural technology in the transportation, storage, marketing, and production stages.ed in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, nearly 72 varieties of mangoes are grown; among them, popular are Khirsapat, Gopalbhog, Lengra, Fazli, Hariyabhanga, and Amrapali. Mangoes are available Bangladesh market from mid-June to the first week of September.
Bangladesh's 8th five-year plan emphasizes safe crop production and expansion of commercial agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture has approved the Good Agricultural Practices Policy, 2020, stating that the policy formulation aims to enhance the production and export of high-quality crops. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture has taken various initiatives to expand the export trade of agricultural products.
Therefore, the government has approved the project titled 'Exportable Mango Production Project' to achieve the goals of SDGs on Agriculture and Nutrition, 8th Five Year Plan, policies such as National Agricultural Policy, 2018 and Bangladesh Good Agricultural Practices Policy, 2020.
Objective of the project
- To increase the production of quality mango by 5% from the current status through good agricultural practices;
- Increasing the income of farmers through the production of exportable mangoes, creating new employment opportunities, boosting export earnings, and developing the rural economy;
- To enhance the capacity building of farmers, officials, and stakeholders on quality mango production and storage.

Beneficiary of the Project
Small and medium farmers, advanced farmers who produce mangoes, will be involved in implementing the project. Farmers participating in training, exhibitions, motivational tours, mango fairs, and workshops are directly the beneficiaries of the project. As a result of the implementation of project activities, the production of quality safe mangoes will increase in the project area. Project area communities are directly and indirectly involved in mango production and marketing. Under the project, 8280 farmer families will get a demonstration, and 27,600 farmers will get training. The number of people who will be involved in motivational tours is 3,660. DAE officials (9840 personnel) from different capacities will be considered stakeholders in good agricultural practices. Overall, the beneficiaries of the project are 38160.
Market Linkage
The project will facilitate to produce exportable quality mangoes. The project will take the necessary initiatives to expand the market by introducing all these mangoes to the export market, domestic super shops, and conscious consumers. Additionaly, the project will develop a product profile of five exportable mango varieties and expand these varieties.
The project will also organize campaigns, seminars, online meetings to connect producers, suppliers, and marketers across the country and abroad to deliver various graded mangoes to the respective consumers as per the standards. Besides these, the project will arrange advocacy meetings annually to establish linkages between mango producers and exporters. With the leadership of the Director General of the Department of Agriculture Extension, mango producers, exporters, marketers, and officials involved in mango production attend the advocacy meetings. Moreover, the project will support creating online platforms for local entrepreneurship and market expansion.
Output of the Project
- Increased Production: Farmers will be trained in modern techniques of mango cultivation in the project area. In addition, they will be accustomed to modern techniques (bagging, pruning, training and GAP production of mangoes, post-harvest techniques) in mango production. Ensuring consistent quality of mango production will increase mango production by 5-10%.
- Income generation and Employment creation: Through hands-on training in mango harvesting, grading, cooling, and washing, the market availability of quality, safe mangoes will increase, and the value chain system will be developed so that farmers will get a fair price for their produce. More labor will be invested in mango production, storage, processing, and marketing, employment opportunities will be created, and farmers' income will be increased.
- Positive impact on the ultra-poor: The production, storage, and processing of high-value crops covered by the project will require more labor, which will increase the employment opportunities and income of the poor and improve their quality of life.
- Socio-economic development of women: Involvement of more women in quality mango production, collection, sorting, packing, storage, and marketing and employment will increase. As a result, employment opportunities for women will be increased, and their nutrition levels will be improved.
- Generation of agricultural entrepreneurship: Production of safe and high-value mango crops, the establishment of storage to prevent rotting, and processing will help set up small-scale industries.
- Foreign exchange earnings: Valuable foreign currencies can be earned by producing exportable mango varieties.
